ChardonNOIR – Episode 6: The Ghost in the Bottle

The winery was quiet for the first time in days.

Beatrice and Rex were in custody. Marcus’s murder solved. The fraudulent wine operation exposed.

But Claire couldn’t sleep.

She stood in the cellar at 2 AM, staring at the Reserve Selection bottles. Something about them gnawed at her. The labels. The signatures. The lot numbers.

She picked up a bottle and held it to the light.

There. Etched into the glass. So faint you’d miss it if you weren’t looking.

A message.

Her aunt’s handwriting. Hidden in the maker’s mark on every single bottle.

“For Claire. Trust the wine. It never lies.”

Her breath caught.

She grabbed another bottle. Another message: “Beatrice is poison.”

Another: “Rex lies about everything.”

Another: “If you’re reading this, I’m already gone.”

Her aunt hadn’t been running a fraud operation. She’d been documenting it. Every bottle was evidence. Hidden in plain sight. Waiting for Claire to find it.

The “cellar ghost” wasn’t haunting the winery.

It was protecting it.

Claire pulled out her phone and called Burns.

“I need you to re-examine every bottle in this cellar,” she said. “My aunt left a paper trail in glass. She knew they’d kill her. And she made sure we’d find the proof.”

Burns was silent for a moment. “Your aunt was a hell of a detective.”

“She was a sommelier,” Claire corrected. “She just knew how to read people the way most people read wine.”

She hung up and walked back upstairs. The tasting room was dark, empty. But somehow it felt lighter.

Her aunt had left her more than a winery.

She’d left her a legacy. And a lesson.

The wine never lies. But people? They always do.

Claire locked the door behind her and smiled.

Somewhere out there, another mystery was waiting.

And she’d be ready.
